TS Varren Institute has been approved by the Directorate General of Shipping (Mumbai) of the Government of India. The latter deals with the implementing of shipping legislation and policy so as to empower the safety for ships and lives at sea, to prevent marine pollution, promote maritime training and education, in coordination with the IMO (International Maritime Organization), regulating welfare and employment of seamen, to develop coastal shipping, to augment shipping tonnage, to examine and certify officers of the Merchant Navy and controlling & supervising allied offices within its administrative jurisdiction.
The first of the courses delivered by TS Varren institute is Basic Safety Training. As per the stipulations of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watch keeping for Seafarers (STCW), sailors have to acquire both ‘basic safety training’ and ‘ familiarization training’ that includes basic First Aid, techniques for Personal survival and elementary firefighting for social responsibility & personal safety.
The aim of this training is to endow sailors with the needed skills and knowledge for identifying potential hazards and responding effectively to emergencies while working on board of ships. Age limit for this course is more than 18 years, duration is 11 days and the course intake is 24. Medical fitness is a pre-requisite. As per the STCW, the code needs that the student must take a 5-day instruction course and the certification must be subject to renewal every five years.
Components of the course are Basic Firefighting (3 days), PST (Personal Survival Techniques- 2.5 days), course for basic first-aid (2.5 days) and PSSR course ( Personal Safety and Social Responsibility- 3 days). Basic Safety Training serves as the point of start for persons pursuing jobs in the merchant navy industry.
The second course offered by the institute is STSDSD. This stands for Security Training for Seafarers with Designated Security Duties. Age limit is above 18 years, duration is 2 days and intake is 24. Students should be medically fit.
This course is open for all seafarers. Medical fitness has to be certified by a doctor approved by DG Shipping. INDOS NO is a mandatory clause.
The third course delivered by TS Varren is the RPST (Refresher course for Personal Survival Techniques). This best RPST course provides seafarers the chance for refreshing their firefighting skills, especially those who are seeking to update training certification in prevention of fires and fighting of fires. It offers essential training and education for ensuring that students keep up the needed standards and stay updated with cutting-edge techniques of fire-fighting.
During this course, students will gain information about fire-fighting as well as the ability for inspecting and maintaining equipment and extinguishing systems related to fire-detection.
When the course is completed successfully, students will be awarded by a certificate issued by the Directorate General of Shipping of the Government of India. Age limit of the course is above 18 years, duration is 0.5 days and intake is 24 candidates.
Candidates for this course should be medically fit, must have completed PST course as per DGS guidelines. They must also arrange for documents like medical certificate, old PST certificate, CDC, INDOS and Passport.
