Over the last couple of months, to increase awareness on towing legislation and driver training, Trailer Training UK have been visiting local equestrian centres and riding schools to provide free information and education.
Taking this a step further, Trailer Training UK have now become sponsors of Crofton Manor, HRTC and Shedfield equestrian and won’t be stopping there.
Speaking to the General Manager Luke Bowdidge, he highlighted the issue and the work being done:
“It’s a shame to see so many people in the equine community are unaware of the current licensing legislation regarding towing trailers in the UK. It is not through ignorance, as those in the Equine Community are intensely set on ensuring they are compliant and are safe for them and their horse. It is just a matter of awareness and education. Hopefully the steps we have taken, and continue to take with our community engagement and our events programme, will help to increase this awareness and additionally make the roads a safer place for everyone over the equestrian season”.
Did you know that if you passed your driving test on or after 1st January 1997, you will most likely need to gain your B+E (Car + Trailer) licence to tow a Trailer over 750kg MAM*, for example horsebox Trailers?
Towing without a B+E licence when its required, carries penalties as strict as not having a car licence. You can get a fine up to £1000 and 6 points on your licence. More seriously, in the event of a crash, insurance will be void. There could also be serious criminal ramifications depending on the scale on the crash.
No one wants the heartbreak of anything happening to their family, a member of the public or a beloved horse, so for further information or advice, find out more here - http://trailertraining.uk.com/courses/be-car-trailer;
*MAM (maximum authorised mass), means the maximum weight the trailer can carry when fully laden. It is not the weight of the trailer when it is empty, this would be referred to as the Unladen Weight.
