Mary Poppins revived and back on a bigger stage

When the Hamilton City Council abruptly closed the curtain on Founders Theatre for the final time in March last year

You could call it unfinished business.

Unfinished showbusiness, to be precise.

When the Hamilton City Council abruptly closed the curtain on Founders Theatre for the final time in March last year, over health and safety concerns, it left about 25 shows, productions and concerts in the lurch.

Not least of these was Hamilton Operatic's production of Mary Poppins, which was booked in for a season in May. While the council picked up the bill for the stymied show, it was still extremely disruptive for the-then 70-strong cast and crew.

Among them was Shaan Kloet, who was preparing to step into the shoes of the titular Poppins and was bubbling with excitement over taking to the stage in "my dream role", the mysterious and magical nanny who appears on the doorstep of the troubled Banks family, just when her services are most required.

"We hadn't started blocking rehearsals when they pulled the plug, but we were all well into preparing for it. I felt really sorry, not so much for myself but for everyone involved. Health and safety always has to come first, but it was a real disappointment. It affected a lot of people, a lot of creatives."

However the removal of Poppins was a temporary one and Hamilton Operatic was always going to have another go at staging it in another venue - in this case the bigger Claudelands Arena across town - and, hopefully, with the Auckland-based Kloet still in the lead role.

When the green light was given for a season in late 2017, there was just one hitch: Kloet - or Antunovich, as she was then known by her maiden surname - was getting hitched.

"I was talking with [director] David [Sidwell] and I told him that my wedding date was set for November 18. He was fine with that, but later on he phoned me back and told me: 'The 18th really isn't going to work'."

The nuptials were moved forward to November 4. It proved a fortuitous rescheduling for the weather alone, which was beautiful that day and "absolutely awful" on the 18th.

Her husband, an accountant, took it all in his stride.

"He's very understanding, he's amazing, really. Two days after the wedding I was down in Hamilton and in rehearsals. I think I have been home about all of two nights since then."

Although she is the star of the show, Kloet, 28, is still a small part of what is a very big picture. There are 44 members of the core cast and company, and an additional 75 people working furiously backstage. Then there is also a 16-piece orchestra and conductor who, with the cast, will perform 22 songs at each show.

Kloet has already packed a lot into her stage career. Since graduating from the National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Art with a Bachelor of Performing Arts, she has sung with the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra, been a soloist at Christmas in the Park at both Christchurch and Auckland, played Grizabella in Cats, and toured with Pirates of Penzance alongside George Henare, Geraldine Brophy, Helen Medlin and Tim Beveridge.

So what's the highlight thus far?

"I would say this is going to be it. It is the dream role for me. To be able to do it, and to do it properly, is an incredible opportunity.

"The lighting, the sound, all the technical aspects are going to be first rate. There's nothing half-assed about this show - we are not leaving anything out."

She isn't the only one bubbling with enthusiasm about the show. Ben Thomas, who plays the lead male role of Bert, has made a series of promotional videos that have been uploaded to YouTube and detail the immense planning and hard work that have gone into staging the show.

Kloet continued to wax ardent, without once resorting to employing the term supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.

"It is just going to be next level ... Everyone working behind the scenes have got their own show going on. Everyone has to be at the right place at just the right time - I've never seen a backstage like it."

Directed by David Sidwell with musical direction from Timothy Carpenter and choreography by Sonja McGirr-Garrett, Mary Poppins will be staged at Claudelands Arena from Saturday, November 25 to December 9.Read more at:http://www.sheindressau.com/short-wedding-dresses | http://www.sheindressau.com/backless-wedding-dresses-au
