One of the most frustrating incidents for a car owner is to have the vehicle broken into or damaged by an act of nature. It is not always possible to get repairs done immediately due to busy work schedules. If the window is simply cracked, there isn’t much you can do until you can get it repair. There are a few things you can do for a gaping hole in the window.
Note that driving with a chipped or cracked window is not recommended unless absolutely necessary. Potholes, weather and other events can cause the crack or chip to expand and obscure your view in the case of the windshield. There are a few precautions you can take before getting Chandler auto glass repair in the event of a broken window.
Remove Broken Glass
The first step is to secure you and any passengers in your vehicle. Wear protective gloves and physical pry and remove any broken pieces of glass.
Next, get a vacuum cleaner without an attachment and vacuum as close to the window as possible. The suction should remove any small remaining pieces of glass that you might have missed. Brush the car seats and vacuum thoroughly to remove any glass in the interior of the vehicle. Take your time to get as much as possible. Avoid carrying passengers on this side of the vehicle or at all if possible until you can get to a Chandler auto care shop.
Clean the Window Frame
Take a clean cloth and dump it in water and wring. Use the damp cloth to carefully wipe down the window frame and seal. Remember to use your protective gloves for this task. The idea here is to remove any dust, dirt and debris so that tape can adhere correctly as you will discover in the next step.
Seal the Window
Get a good size of clear packing tape for this task. Next, tape vertically from one side of the window frame to the other. Do this in the interior of the vehicle to avoid damaging your paint job. Make sure that each new strip of tape overlaps with the next one so you end up with a consistent sheet of tape at the end of the task.
Packing tape is a good alternative for cardboard especially for keeping moisture out of your car.
Note that this is not a permanent solution and you still need Chandler automotive repair as soon as possible. You may also be breaking traffic laws especially when driving with a cracked or damaged windshield. This is simply a precautionary measure when you cannot get the damage fixed immediately.
