The progress and prosperity of every country depending on the generation and availability of electricity. This is primarily because the consumption of electricity acts as a barometer of a nation’s economic well-being and determines the standard of living of people.

If a country can generate abundant and cost-effective electricity, it has a positive impact on the growth of industries, transport, as well as agriculture. Hence, the importance of generating sufficient electricity for any country cannot be stressed upon enough. However, major electricity in India is generated by non-renewable resources that aren’t going to be around forever. Hence, the power generation companies in India are focusing on generating electricity through conventional methods.

In this article, we have covered the different types of electricity commonly generated in power generation companies in India.

1. Hydroelectricity

The future of India and its success greatly depends on how we can generate and make use of hydroelectricity. Currently, we primarily use coal and petroleum to generate electricity. However, as they are exhaustible, we can rely on these materials for long. Hence, power generation companies in India are starting to depend less on these materials and more on generating hydroelectricity.

In India, hydroelectricity currently accounts of less than one-fourth of the total electricity generated. However, as the demand increases, this amount needs to increase, to ensure that non-renewable resources like coal and petroleum are saved from overexploitation.

2. Thermal Electricity (including steam, gas and oil)

Thermal electricity is generated from fossil fuels like diesel and natural gas, which means that the availability of this type of electricity is mainly dependent on the availability of these fuels. That being said, thermal electricity has shown a remarkable growth rate in both actual generation and the installation capacity, as compared to hydro and nuclear energy.

It is important to note that this type of electricity is exceptionally prominent in areas where the geographical conditions are not suitable for generating hydroelectricity. This accounts for more over 14 states across the country.

3. Nuclear Electricity

Nuclear energy is generated from uranium, which is found in the copper belt of Jharkhand and Rajasthan, and thorium, out of which India contains 50% of the word’s total. The availability of these resources enables us to create nuclear electricity of up to 3, 50,000 MW energy for 300 years.

Moreover, most of the nuclear power generation companies in India have been created near sources of water as it requires large quantities for cooling purposes.

India is one of the six countries, i.e., USA, Russia, UK, France and Canada, which has developed the capability of designing, constructing, commissioning and operating a nuclear power station without any help from outside.

With the rapid depletion of non-renewable sources that have been burning to give us electricity, it is crucial for finding new means, if we want to maintain our lifestyle. The power generation companies in India are doing their bit, are you?
