Industries are the backbone of an economy and country. However, industrialisation does bring with it hazards like air pollution. To continue industrialisation at its ongoing aggressive pace, it is vital to have in place necessary air pollution control systems that minimize damage from their activity.

An effective measure of keeping air pollution in control is the electrostatic precipitator, also known as the electrostatic air cleaner. Electrostatic precipitators are mandatory installations for all industrial facilities and power-houses. They function using electric charge to remove impurities that are in the form of solid particles or liquid droplets—from air or other gases and other flues.

Energy is applied to particulate matter in the precipitator without significantly impeding the flow of gases. The particles in the gas stream get charged and attracted to and deposited on plates and other collection devices. The air that has been treated is allowed to pass out of the precipitator and through a stack to the atmosphere. When the collection devices have collected enough particles, they get shaken off on to the collectors by mechanical rappers. These particulates, can be either wet or dry, and fall into a hopper at the bottom of the unit. From here they are transported by a conveyor system for disposal or recycling.

In most industrial plants, particulate matter that is formed in the manufacturing process is released in the form of dust in the hot exhaust gases. If these are released into the atmosphere, particulates can cause severe damage like reduced visibility, and major climate change, leading to a number of health issues such as lung damage and bronchitis. Electrostatic precipitators remove 99.9% of dust particles from gases, making them highly effective air pollution control systems.

Electrostatic precipitators are useful for cleaning up flue gases. They can reduce particle pollution for particles whose size is up to 1 micron in diameter, and some even go up to particle size of 0.01 micron in diameter. In addition, they can handle large volumes of gas at various temperatures and flow rates, removing either solid particles or liquid droplets.

Considered to be among the best air pollution control systems precipitators are used for a number of household and industry applications as listed :

•Removing oil mists in machine shops

•Removing acid mists in chemical process plants

•Cleaning blast furnace gases

•Removing bacteria and fungi in medical settings and pharmaceutical production facilities

•Purifying air in ventilation and air conditioning systems

•Material recovery from gas flow
