After leaving high school, Jared Derrico wasn’t sure what he wanted to do with his life. He enrolled in vocational school, where he began developing the skills he would need to become The Pipe Surgeon. “When I took the plumbing course I knew it was the right fit for me,” he says of those early steps in his career. After earning his qualifications, he began working for a local plumbing company, where he distinguished himself through his hard work. He also gained invaluable experience, which he decided to put to good use by striking out on his own later on. Now the owner of his own business, Derrico is able to reflect on the many challenges that he has overcome to find success.

The first concern for many new business owners is finding regular clients in order to generate income. While Derrico was confident in his skills, particularly in regards to drain maintenance, he had to develop a quick understanding of how to gain exposure for his business and the positive effects of good word of mouth. He resolved this issue by offering superior services to all of his clients, going above and beyond in everything that he did. He soon began generating good word of mouth, leading to a large volume of regular clients.

While plumbing is his passion, running a business is not as simple as turning up and providing great service. That is only one part of the puzzle. Learning about the importance of business administration and what he needed to do to make sure both he and his clients are protected at all times was a brand new challenge. He dedicates himself to staying on top of this additional workload and has embraced the opportunity to learn new skills because of it.

Above all else, The Pipe Surgeon must work hard to make sure he provides a service that exceeds that offered by his competitors. He is learning constantly in order to further develop his skillset, using this knowledge to improve his services and ensure his clients get exactly what they pay for when they make use of his services.
