The international freight forwarder and industry observer TELS has reported about the major shifts in cargo transportation. Although Germany has retained its leading positions as a foreign trade partner, there has been a major reallocation of transportation means in favor of road transportation.
The analytic department at TELS has carried out a comparative research based on the Eurostats data to reveal changes in the German transportation policy. Thus, the research shows that German freight forwarders has returned to road transportation as a major type of importing goods to the Russian Federation in the first half of 2012, while during the past years, from 2010 to 2011, marine transportation has been leading in international freight forwarding. Therefore, according to the TELS experts, for now Germany has returned to its primary import method.
The 2012 stats show that road transportation takes over cargo shipments by sea and railroad, and if marine transportation has dropped by 75 thousand tons, road transportation has gained additional 134 tons in comparison with the first half of 2011.
Commenting on the general situation on the EU-Russia transportation market, the TELS experts have pointed out that it has been greatly facilitated by bilateral agreements between Poland, Germany and Russia. The parties have reached an agreement on a number of issues, including additional road permits exchange. “These agreements have expanded the traffic capacity and lowered freight rates for road transportation, that is why more and more freight forwarders now prefer road transport over other means when arranging import from Germany to Russia”.
