The Financial Year 2017-18 has ended, and with the year closing, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has released its annual report containing the status of all the projects they handled this year. This Financial Year has been extremely productive for NHAI is all the ways, it has awarded the total of 150 road projects of 7,400 km worth Rs 1,22,000 crore, in 2017-18.

The National Highway Authority of India has taken an outstanding leap in awarding road projects, in last five years it has maintained the average length of road projects to 2,860 km, which slightly went up in the last Financial Year to 4,335 Km. But this year, NHAI has broken all the records and managed to award road project of 7,400 km, which is the highest recorded achievement by NHAI since its inception in 1995.

The Government of India had launched the Bharatmala Pariyojana, a programme with the potential to change the entire landscape of Indian roads. In November 2017, a new sanction procedure was put in place for this ambitious programme and the NHAI was entrusted with the full powers for sanctioning EPC projects. The pace of tendering and awarding projects also picked up after this. The NHAI didn’t stop here; it has also come up with a high powered Projects Appraisal Committee and Cost Committee within the organisation.

Post-Bharatmala, the NHAI had called for the tenders for 232 projects involving around 11,200 km of road length, and the estimated cost of these projects is more than Rs. 1,96,000 crore. Many of these projects require extensive land acquisition, to accelerate the procedure and begin construction works as early as possible; the NHAI had employed many of the retired officers and came up with the strong monitoring mechanisms. It is also expected that the NHAI will award new projects of around 3,000 km in the first two months of the next Financial Year (2018-19).

Break down of the project according to the mode of awarding:

• Out of the total projects awarded, 3,791 km length was awarded on Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) mode at a cost of Rs 43,000 crore.
• 3,396 km was awarded on Hybrid Annuity mode at a cost of Rs 76,500 crore.
• 209 km on Toll mode at a cost of Rs. 2,500 crore.

Break down of the project according to States:
