THE CAUSES OF SCIATICA Sciatic neuralgia is related to irritation of the sciatic nerve. This can be caused by various factors: Age : in the elderly , the narrowing of the lumbar canal where the nerve passes in its initial path can cause irritation of the sciatic nerve which will produce localized pain in the lower back. A herniated disc : the pinching of the vertebrae can compress one of the roots of the sciatic nerve causing pain in the lower back. A fall : an accident or a bad fall can cause pain in the sciatic nerve Piriform syndrome : this is the most common cause in the athlete. The piriform (or pyramidal) muscle may, under the action of an inflammation or a volume too large, compress the sciatic nerve on its way and thus cause acute pain in the buttocks.
