How To Block Political Posts on Facebook

Use Social Fixer to automatically filter political status updates from you Facebook stream.

We’re nearing the end of what has been a particularly heated election season and if you’re like me you’ve noticed an increasing amount of annoying political posts showing in your Facebook stream. We all have Facebook friends who tend to get a little excited during an election, but if you think it’s bad now, just wait, there are still 10 days left until this thing is over.

Social media’s about to get a lot more noisy, but luckily there’s something you can do right now to filter out all of the noise without having to de-friend anyone. Were going to use a tool called Social Fixer to automatically filter political status updates from you stream.

Step 1: Install Social Fixer Browser Extension

Social Fixer is a free, easy to install web browser extension. It’s available for all of the major browsers including: Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera, and Internet Explorer. Download and install the correct version of Social Fixer for the web browser you use. Once it’s installed, head over to Facebook.com and choose the “Minimal” installation when prompted.

Step 2: Setup Political Status Update Filters

We’ll be setting Social Fixer up to filter out political status updates. First go to the blue bar at the top of Facebook and a click on Social Fixer’s options, then select the Filters Section, located in the right sidebar. It’s possible to create quite complex filters with this tool, but starting out we’ll keep it simple. We will be hiding any Facebook status updates sent to your stream that contain words associated with politics or the election. Under “Matching Text”, enter the following text:

/Obama|Romney|republicans|democrats|election/i

Don’t forget to include the “/i” at the end of the string, this command will make sure that the match is case insensitive. After this text is entered, click on the “Hide” option, which will tell Social Fixer to not show any posts that contain these words in your stream.

We’ve given you a very basic word list in this example, however you add as many words as you like to extend the block list, simply append them to the current list, separated by a pipe “|” symbol. When you return to Facebook you’ll notice that all of those annoying political posts are now missing.

Let’s face it – if you wan’t the latest political news, Facebook is probably the last place you should go. Do you really want to be getting into heated arguments with your friends and family (I know for many of you the answer to this is yes.)
