Ford Steps Up Sustainability with Recycled Materials for Mass Market Automotive Production

Posted June 13, 2013 by suleman

Ford Motor Company has taken a giant leap for green automotive manufacturing by incorporating recycled fabric material for globally produced cars.

Ford, whose company has been a global force in automotive design and and mass manufacturing, has once again moved the automotive industry forward again. Ford will launch a range of 15 news models to be sold all around world and will optimize recycled material such as plastic bottles, and industrial waste in the form of fabrics and yarns. Ford is calling it their commitment to “Green Motoring”, and has highlighted the opportunity and benefits to to reuse materials.

The host model for the ‘Serious Sustainability’ campaign will be the 2013 Ford Fusion, a mid-sized sedan vehicle that is popular in a large number of global markets. Ford believes that by recycling the plastic bottles and industrial waste to create durable, high performance fabric, they will create enough yarn from the waste to make 1.5 million yards of fabric for vehicle production each year.

Just in the North American market alone, it has a potential to equate up to 900,000 yards of recycled material by the time the 2013 Ford Fusion is in full production. Nearly 66 percent of the recycled fabric will be in their vehicle programs in 2013, which has changed a lot since the 0 percent recycled material used in 2007. This means if a consumer wants to purchase a new 2013 vehicle from Ford, chances are they have the option to choose one with seats from recycled material.

As the 2013 Ford fusion leads the field again in terms of the volume of recycled material in the product offering, Ford now offers a range of 41 fabrics that contain various levels of recycled material available across 15 total product lines, and the company expects this number to keep increasing.
