Re-openings leave us with one foot in normal and the other foot in the Twilight Zone. Some of this is pleasant, like seating for cafes and restaurants extended into the streets , and some of it can still jangle ones nerves, like seeing so many people in masks. Masks and gloves are probably a good idea, as is social distancing, while we ride out the end of this pandemic. It is up to us to keep ourselves well and to help those around us also stay well. Even with viruses that are less contagious than this one, more attention to hygiene will keep more of us well more of the time. The 20 seconds for hand washing is probably the most important and most easily practiced part of any population wide wellness movement.
In a world where international travel is inevitable, the movement of micro-organizisms across borders is also inevitable. And who of us wants to be confined in our exploration of earth and its wonders? There is so much we can learn from seeing and experiencing other cultures first hand. So much beauty to see, and so many different flavors to taste. We can all enjoy each other more if we practice proper hygiene and have some certainty that each of the rest of us is also.
