The military are getting serious in their efforts to identify ammunition that is harsh on adversaries, but kind to Mother Nature as well as its users. Luckily for them, ‘green bullets’ are no longer a fantasy, but have been made a reality by Ecomass Technologies. Using innovative lead free polymer technologies, Ecomass has brought to market lead-free training ammunition that fully matches the ballistic performance of lead rounds but without any collateral damage to the environment or the shooter. The bullets have been designed to maintain performance while eliminating any and all use of environmentally dangerous materials for all types of ammunition.

Austin:A profound concern exists over the potentially deadly impact of traditional bullets on the environment. Military and law enforcement officials alike are growing increasingly concerned of the adverse effects of lead ammunition to both the environment and the shooter, the result of which has led to ever-increasing demand for green ammunition. This ammunition for training needs to be such that it matches the lead-based ballistic performance but without any lead or other dangerous constituents. The U.S. military has stated strongly and reiterated in many forums its goal to eliminate lead usage entirely by 2018. Recognizing this demand, Ecomass has been constantly developing, improving and expanding its ammunition product line since 1998.

Ecomass is in the business of producing high gravity compounds, otherwise referred to as high density thermoplastic materials, one of the most significant applications of which has been in the development and manufacturing of nontoxic projectiles that are 100% lead-free. Made up of copper or tungsten polymer materials, these green training projectiles are exclusively designed for close-quarters combat and training ranges. Additionally, these projectiles are completely frangible, powderizing upon impact, thus eliminating any ricochet risk to the shooter.

High-density metals such as tungsten are embedded into a polymeric matrix with regulated density and physical properties as required by the projectile application. These thermoplastics are produced in a highly regulated injection molding process resulting in projectiles of various calibers including 40 Cal, 9mm, 5.56mm and 40mm door breaching rounds. These rounds not only improve shooter safety, but also eliminate any lead contamination concerns at firing ranges.

The frangible projectiles also adhere to the most stringent tolerances for repeatable performance with the utmost reliability and optimized performance. Moreover, Ecomass’ projectiles have passed the strict test of ballistic performance by the military as well as by several of the world’s prominent ammunition manufacturers. This means that the ammunitions are a pure ballistic match to lead based equivalents at 25m (pistol) and 100m (rifle).

According to Ecomass President, Robert Durkee, “Our innovative nontoxic composite materials together with the manufacturing benefits of the injection molding process facilitate us to come up with superior quality green projectiles. We are dedicated to constantly improving, refining and expanding our polymer technologies and to grow our projectiles product line. Our goal is to stay at the forefront of the latest lead-free frangible ammunition technology as well as to continue to offer ‘the bullets of the future.’”
