30 30 30 Receives Government Funding

Australian government offers financial support to turn the green dream into reality

When it comes to solar energy, Australia is miles ahead of many other countries in the world. As the continent enjoys such an abundance of sunlight it is truly no surprise. Yet, there is still one factor that slows down the expansion on solar in the country and this is the investment it requires due to solar system prices that are still high. While this is the kind of solution that will save you money over time, many don't have the funding readily available to make the initial cash investment.

It is the situation that led to the 30 30 30 goals. What is the 30 30 30 goal? The term refers to the target that the Australian government has set for itself to reduce the cost of an installed watt to be no more than 30c by 2030. So, they want to achieve 30% module efficiency by 2030 by reducing solar system prices to result in the cost of a watt being no more than 30c. To achieve this, you need a capital injection.

"When it comes to capital investment into the solar industry and making it more affordable to the wider population, it is often in the form of government funding. Thus, when the local government announced earlier on that they are investing $40 million into the funding of research and the development of this dream, it gave the solar industry a huge push into the right direction," says Joe Springer, the manager at Springers Solar.
The cash injection is split into two equal parts with $20 million going to research and an equal share going to development. When it comes to these two areas in the solar industry, the focal points are cells and modules and operations and maintenance to give only a few examples.

Is 30 30 30 a realistic dream? While we still have a few years to go to 2030, the current situation is promising. At the moment the industry is standing at a 20% mark when it comes to commercial budget solar panels and we are looking at 22% in the more premium class solutions. Through proper funding for research and development, these numbers can be improved, making 30 30 30 far more than a mere dream but something that those in the industry work towards to make a reality.

According to Springer, an initiative like this from the local government is not only vital as it provides the necessary funding, but also because it creates a new awareness towards the industry and what it is capable of now and in the future.
