Phenomenal (and sudden) success of Flappy Bird

Some suspect that Nguyen might have used bots to promote his game- an accusation that was denied by the game developer himself.

Nowadays, there are not many people who haven’t at least heard the name Flappy BirdPC, Android and iOS by now. This enormously popular game was released on all major platforms. It is a side-scrolling game where you control a bird protagonist whose name is Faby. Your goal is to travel as far as possible while avoiding the rows of pipes that appear in your way every 1.5 seconds or so. Some of the older gamers may recognize these pipes as being very similar to the ones in Mario. This game has received its fair share of criticism for, supposedly, using “ripped-off” art assets, including the protagonist bird.
Nowadays, an original version of Flappy Bird PCis available for free. A slightly different version can be purchased exclusively from Amazon Fire TV. Its name is Flappy Birds Family.
When the game first came out it received very poor ratings from various game journalists and reviewers. Some were annoyed by the game’s frustrating mechanics and high difficulty, while others found it to be shallow. However, there were also positive reviews and commentaries about it. For example, Amongtech.com’s reviewer, Jenifer Whiteside wrote that this might be the next Candy Crush Saga (which was a very popular mobile game at the time). Also, John Romero (co-creator of Doom, a very popular first person shooter game) claimed that Flappy Bird PC, Android, iOS is a reaction against prevailing game design. When it first came out, the game did not sell very well and did not have any fan base to speak of. However, it became overwhelmingly popular sometime later. The exact reason for this is still unknown. Some suspect that Nguyen might have used bots to promote his game- an accusation that was denied by the game developer himself.
Shortly after, Flappy Bird PC, iOSbecame the best-selling mobile application on the Apple Store . Nguyen claimed to have been earning more than $50,000 daily on the sales of the game and in-game advertisement.
Some time during February 2014, Nguyen has tweeted that he wants to remove Flappy Bird PC, Android, iOS from the Google Play and Apple store (it was still available on various web sites, though). The reason, he stated, was that he felt guilty because of how addictive this game is. He then received numerous death threats, suicide promises and other disturbing letters from the fans. Nevertheless, the game was taken down from all official App stores on time, as was promised. Some newspapers and reporters (such as TuoiTre News, for example) have wondered if the game’s removal has something to do with legal issues.
Nowadays, a new and improved version of Flappy Bird PC, Android, iOSis available through Amazon’s App store (it can also probably be found on the internet using Google). Nguyen promised it would be less addictive and feature a multiplayer option. You can try it and see for yourself, if you are not intimidated by the game’s perceived difficulty level
