There’s no denying that obesity comes with its share of potential health risks. A new study, however, casts more light on the topic, indicating that extra pounds can dramatically increase a woman’s risk for contracting this potentially fatal disease.

“While we’ve long understood that obesity and certain types of cancers are strongly linked, the latest study out of the United Kingdom delivers findings that indicate just how important it is for women to safely shed pounds to lower their cancer risks,” says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon of Southlake Oncology.

The Cancer Research UK study found that women who are obese may see their cancer risks rise as much as 40 percent courtesy of those extra pounds. The types of cancers obese women are more likely to contract include gallbladder, uterine, kidney, pancreatic and post-menopausal breast cancer, among others.

Obesity is also linked to a number of other potentially fatal diseases, Dr. Echt says, making it especially important for women who find they are well above recommended weights for their age and height should take action to tip the scales in their favor.

“Obesity not only raises a woman’s cancer risks, it can also lead to a greater incidence of heart disease, diabetes and stroke,” Dr. Echt says. “Taking steps to drop pounds in a healthy, safe manner can lower the risk of cancer for a woman while also helping keep these other medical concerns at bay.”

Dr. Echt recommends women gain control of their weight by adopting healthy eating habits that include balanced meals that are low in fat. Exercise can also prove critical in the quest for losing weight and maintaining the loss once it’s experienced. For women who struggle with their weight, seeking out the advice of a medical professional can be an important step to take.

“Losing weight and adopting lifestyle habits that are healthier can cut cancer risks,” Dr. Echt says. “Although there’s no way to guarantee that cancer will not present, making healthier choices can reduce those odds greatly.”
