It is a granular substance derived from Silicon dioxide and presents itself in a translucent and hard granules form. The appearance of the desiccant is that of crystals or beads. Microscopically, the substance has porous structure and has interlocking molecular features that provide for a very large surface area that gives it the desiccant nature and that too of a high degree. The gel accumulates water vapor on its surface due to a very low internal vapor pressure until it attains an equal pressure system where there is no further adsorption possible. Used at places where water vapor is damaging to goods or machinery, these desiccants are employed in sachets that are proportional to the volume of water vapor to be adsorbed. Usually their adsorption is about 40% of the original weight of the desiccant. The principle of adsorption is simple as it all is driven by the law of affinity. Water is attracted to its low density and high surface area structures. The gel is available in 2 types: Indicative and non-indicative gels, indicative ones change color with adsorption.
