Tips For The College Students To Stay Sober

Posted May 23, 2021 by sobercurator

As you begin to grow in your recovery, you may begin to realize new dreams and passions that you would love to pursue.

When you get sober you begin to learn about yourself on a deeper level; realizing that you may have more steps to take in order to achieve the things you want out of life.

It is common for recovered addicts and alcoholics to decide that they want to go to college. College can open up many opportunities, but it can also invoke varying feelings of fear, anxiety, and stress.

College students are notorious for throwing huge dorm parties, keggers, and the overall act of experimenting with illegal drugs. The partying atmosphere may become a huge determining factor in whether or not you want to attempt to earn a degree - solely out of fear of being tempted to sink back into your old habits. Luckily, many other recovered addicts have gone before you and paved the way by figuring out the "do's and don’ts" of being a sober individual attending college.

Find other Sober POP Culture for students
This may sound like a laborious task if you are attending a university-style college, but believe it or not, there are tons of people who don't partake in the partying culture. Whether it be for religious reasons, they are also in recovery, or just simply because they are dedicated to their study - they are out there. Instead of going out to parties or bars on the weekend, go hang out at the college library or in the common rooms. The people that you meet there will be the type of students who don't drink or drug in excess. Also, it's safe to bet that you can find your fellow "students in recovery" hanging out in the same areas.

Join a campus recovery community
On most university campuses, they provide collegiate recovery communities (CRC) for their Sober Spotlight students. If you have been to recovery support groups or meetings, like a 12-step based fellowship or SMART recovery, these CRCs provide you with similar support. CRCs are usually part of the campus's mental health services, but they are run by the students themselves rather than a therapist or professor. These communities allow students to socialize with their sober peers, host or attend meetings, and sometimes even provide counseling from therapists qualified in addiction-therapy.
