The My Next of Kin Card is a free card that has been designed to ensure that a partner, loved one or family can be contacted if someone should be taken ill and not be able to communicate the required information themselves, the card is freely obtainable and it's founders say it works just about anywhere in the world.

In the U.K alone more than 60,000 people are taken to the accident and emergency department every day. When someone is taken ill or involved in an accident the emergency services often struggle to find their next of kin, if they have a phone on them it will probably be locked by pin number or even biometrics if the patient has been injured in an accident their phone may even be smashed and unusable. The patient's drivers licence and bank cards won't say who to contact in an emergency and the emergency services have no idea if the patient has existing medical complications or other needs.

A new card which has been recognised by The National Police Chiefs’ Council aims to ensure that the patients next of kin can be contacted quickly and easily. The card will save emergency responders time as they won't have to track down the patients next of kin, finding the next of kin in a timely fashion will ensure that any special requirements can be taken into consideration and that the patients family and friends can be there for them.

The card was founded by Lee Hemington after his mother, Faye was taken to hospital in a coma. Doctors gave Faye less than 48hrs to live and the police spent 5 hours trying to track down her family. The police had Fayes driving licence but that only told them Fayes address and her phone was locked by a pin number. Once Lee was tracked down he was able to give the police and medical professionals vital information which enabled them to save Faye's life. Lee said he hopes the card will save lives. The new card has not just been recognised by the National Police Chiefs’ Council it has been heralded by a number of celebrities. Joanna Lumley OBE said, “A brilliant idea!”, Dame Esther Rantzen said, “I fully support these cards!” Eamonn Holmes OBE said, “These cards will make a big difference!” Alistair Stewart OBE said, A great Idea indeed. The My Next of Kin Card is available free of charge, mynextofkin.org.uk is a not for profit organisation, a person wishing to use the card would simply write their details on the back and then pop it in their purse or wallet, recyclable plastic cards are available for a small fee.
