ShopKhoj walks you down memory lane – Check out the historic Delhi shopping markets .

Delhi has been the Capital of India for centuries. Shopping markets from Mughal times exist in this city.

Did you know , for instance, that the Chandni Chowk Shopping Market was designed by the Mughal Emperor ShahJahan’s daughter ? Chandni Chowk means Moonlit Square. It is one of the oldest Delhi markets in the walled city of Old Delhi, which was called Shahjahanabad in the 17th century. The walled city including Lal Qila or Red Fort was established in 1650 AD by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. It was designed by his daughter Jahanara Begum Sahib. Chandni Chowk is the main street that runs from the Lahore Gate of Red Fort to the Fatehpuri Masjid. Earlier , a canal ran through its length and served as a waterway. The moonlight reflected in the canal waters lent an ethereal feel to the place. Alas, the canal no longer exists. Today , Chandni Chowk is the go to market for bridal lehengas and bridal sarees.

Another market in Chandni Chowk is Chhatta Chowk Bazaar: Also called Meena Bazaar, it is inside the Red Fort. It is a covered bazaar for souvenirs, ranging from artificial jewellery, fake antiques, handicrafts and embroidered bags to hand-painted wall-hangings. It is similar to the covered market of Istanbul.

Other historic shopping markets in Delhi

Shahpur Jat Shopping Market:

The royal town of the Jats, as literally translated, Shahpur Jat is a fascinating place and one of New Delhi’s well kept secrets. The narrow, cramped lanes, winding through crumbling haveli style houses belie the royal stature the area held during the times of Allaudin Khilji.

In 1303, Ala-ud-din Khilji founded the first Muslim city of Delhi, Siri, in Shahpur Jat. Nothing remains of it except parts of its wall, a mosque and a structure called baradari.About 900 years ago, Shahpur Jat was slowly occupied by the Dagar farmers from Indri in Haryana. The land was fertile, they were able farmers and got rich quickly. As more clans came in, Shahpur Jat (the wealthy colony of Jats) came into being.

Tucked into various corners of old bungalows, the designer stores retail anything from funky western tops , bridal gowns and dresses, bridal lehengas through fabulous designer sarees in Kota, cotton and silk through trendy silver jewellery and unique home décor products.

Hauz Khas Shopping Market:

In Urdu language, 'Hauz' means “water tank” (or lake) and 'Khas' means “royal”, giving it the meaning — the “Royal Tank”. The large water tank or reservoir was first built by Alauddin Khilji (r. 1296–1316) (the plaque displayed at the site records this fact) to supply water to the inhabitants of Siri Fort.- WIKI

The medieval village complex adjoining Tank has been converted into just that. Indian arts, crafts, textiles and designs are wrapped in 21st century shopping bags for elite shoppers and tourists, at mud-plastered shopping kiosks with a 13th century water-tank, a mosque, a tomb and an Islamic seminary for backdrop.

Connaught Place Shopping Market
Known also as Rajiv Chowk, Connaught Place is one of the largest commercial, financial and business centres in Delhi. It was developed as a showpiece of Lutyens’ Delhi. Named after the Duke of Connaught, the construction work was started in 1929 and completed in 1933. Connaught Place has Georgian architecture, modelled after the Royal Crescent in Bath, England. The sheer architectural beauty of the austere white buildings in CP is striking. Though it was designed by Robert Tor Russel and W H Nicholls as a circle, the loop was opened up during construction and what came up was a horse-shoe shaped inner and outer ‘circle’. The circles house colonnaded and two-tiered buildings with shops and restaurants mostly on the ground floor while the residences on the first floor have been mostly replaced by offices, banks and other commercial establishments.

The inner circle or Connaught Place is renamed Rajiv Chowk and has blocks A-F. It houses shops like Adidas Originals, Allen Solly, Bentley, Bon Ton, Cantabil, Gas, Johnson Watch Company, Kalpana, Lee, Louis Philippe, Neelkanth Jewellers, Nike, Orra, Park Avenue, Pepe, Proline and Fila, Roopchand Jewellers, Snowhite Square and Wills Lifestyle. The outer circle also called Connaught Circus and now renamed Indira Chowk, has blocks G-P. Digjam, Lacoste, Omega, Rado, RL Exports and TAG Heuer have showrooms here.
