German Joblessness Hits Record Low

Europe’s biggest economy continues to set example to its EU neighbours.

Germany's unemployment rate dropped to a record low in May even as the jobless rate across the Eurozone remained stubbornly high at 10.2% in April.

The rate in Germany slipped to 6% from 6.3% in April, the Federal Labour Office said.

The rate is the lowest level since East and West Germany reunified after the collapse of the Berlin Wall. Though differences between the two halves of the country remain, the feat is impressive and testament to the German work ethic and economic prowess.

“This fall reflects the sheer strength of the labor market and will be viewed with envy across the border in France which is struggling with high unemployment and labor unrest in the form of national strikes with workers protesting over labor reforms,” said Floyd Paché, chief economist at Shinsei Corporate Management.

Though still above 10%, the Eurozone jobless rate was actually down from 11% in April last year and the lowest number for the 19 countries using the single currency since August 2011, Eurostat said.

The unemployment rate for the 28 countries in the European Union fell to 8.7% in April, slightly lower than the 8.8% it posted in March and the 9.6% it posted in the same month last year.

That was the lowest rate for the EU since April 2009. “Things are improving but at a markedly slower pace than Germany,” said Paché.

Shinsei Corporate Management says its outlook on the EU as a whole remains negative but reaffirmed its positive outlook on German industrials and pharmaceutical companies.
