How it works
Forward collision warning scans the road ahead while you drive. It's not designed to just beep at you if there is a car in your way, it actually gives an audio and visual notification so that you can take action before reaching them! Some features are able to detect other objects like motorcycles or pedestrians but some don't have this capability which may also limit their usefulness. Be sure to check out what kind of forward collision warning system comes equipped on your vehicle by checking with its owner’s manual first!
THE TECHNOLOGY BEHIND IT
Sensors located in the front of your car are able to detect how close you are to cars in front of you. These typically come from camera- or radar-based systems and can warn with sounds, visuals, vibrations or a quick brake pulse; but they may also employ a mix that includes all these warnings as well.
WHAT YOU NEED TO DO
Always be a cautious driver and keep your distance, but sudden braking might happen at any moment. Forward collision warning is designed to detect hazards ahead so that you can take action in time if alerted by the system. If warned about an impending hazard, prepare for it as soon as possible and steer or brake accordingly!
TIPS FOR USING
Your forward collision warning feature’s sensors can be blocked by ice and snow, so make sure to clear any build-up off your features before you drive. If not sure where the sensor is located in relation to my car or how it works, I should reference my owner's manual for instructions on clearing out anything blocking its way.
Glare at sunrise or sunset can render forward collision warning features useless, so don’t rely on this feature exclusively. Always pay attention to the road ahead and be mindful of rear-end crashes as they are most common in America.
