In the growing digital and interconnected age, the requirement for data security is greater than ever before. That is the reason biometric systems are gaining popularity. Being endorsed by giant technological companies, government and other large corporation, technology driven biometric system is capable of making credit cards, servers, airports and electronic devices safer. Fingerprints scans have already raised the wave with Apple’s TouchID, but that it is just the beginning. The next digital era will see biometric devices that can recognize palm veins, DNA, retinas and even odours for access control and security purpose. Tech giants such as Apple and Samsung have already called Biometrics as ground breaking in the security by integrating this technology into their devices. South Korean multinational conglomerate, Samsung attempted to catch up with iPhone X’s Face ID security. Introduced in Galaxy S9, the intelligent scan security biometric feature, facial recognition authenticates the user followed by iris scanner. If both techniques fail, it uses a combination for a third check.

Besides, Apple’s Face ID utilizes True Depth camera array for creating 3D facial map to compare with the version stored in Secure Enclave. Dot projector creates 30,000 reference points on the user’s face in order to beat simple photographs. Apple is also working harder for creating more advanced techniques like lifelike masks. Other phone companies’ such as LG have introduced voice security for user authentication to their new device. LG V30 has face recognition system that unlocks phone with face. Artificial Intelligence startup, Kneron launched, Kneron NPU IP Series in March 2018, for on-device facial and gesture recognition. It comes with 3 neural processing units (NPUs) for smartphones, drones and IoT devices. The KDP 300 is built as an ultra-low power processor used for facial recognition in smartphones. The company’s KDP 500 comes with real time recognition for multiple faces, hands and body gestures. According to the company announcement, KDP 700 is in development that will offer advanced artificial intelligence applications for robots, smartphones and smart surveillance devices.

Biometric System recognition through human eye is getting momentum in commercial and civil identification need. Indian Aadhar Card Program is the world’s notable example of iris and fingerprint recognition that holds templates of more than 1.2 billion Indian citizens. It is considered to be the biggest biometric database. The United Arab Emirates’ border control agencies are also using iris recognition border security checkpoints. Travellers who are not local citizens and hold visitor visa have to undergo iris recognition process to enter the UAE. Similar efforts are made in Canada. They are using iris recognition technology under CANPASS Air program, and the system is operational in many Canadian Airports.

Biometric System is becoming increasingly popular in connected cars as well. The 2018 North American Auto Show in Detroit launched Nissan XMotion that uses biometric system such as fingerprint identification for enhancing security features for the car. The car, which does not have any keypad on the door or ignition, uses fingerprint scanner for starting the car and unlocking doors. As time moves forward, implementation of biometric technology will be grow and involve in even more areas that touches lives.
