First of all, CBD—what is it? Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the many cannabinoids produced by cannabis. So is it legal to sell CBD? It depends. Federally, cannabis or marijuana is still a controlled substance. This means that in the national level or based on the national law, marijuana is illegal. However, since every state has the power to enact its own set of laws, some 33 states have legalized the medical use of marijuana. This means that CBD is also legal in these states. In addition, 11 of these states have also legalized the recreational use of marijuana. This means that one doesn’t need a prescription to actually buy marijuana.

Here are the states where marijuana is legal for both recreational and medical use:

• Alaska
• California
• Colorado
• District of Columbia
• Maine Massachusetts
• Michigan
• Nevada
• Oregon
• Vermont
• Washington
• Illinois – On May 31, 2019, Illinois passed the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act, which will allow the recreational use of marijuana in the state. The law was signed by Gov. J.B. Pritzker on June 25, 2019. However, the law will take effect on Jan. 1, 2020 yet. Medical marijuana has long been legal in the state.

Here are the states where marijuana is legal only for medical use:

• Arizona
• Arkansas
• Connecticut
• Delaware
• Florida
• Hawaii
• Louisiana
• Maryland
• Minnesota
• Missouri
• Montana
• New Hampshire
• New Jersey
• New Mexico
• New York
• North Dakota
• Ohio
• Oklahoma
• Pennsylvania
• Rhode Island
• Utah
• West Virginia

In these states, the CBD oil is medically legal but under strict circumstances:

• Alabama
• Georgia
• Indiana
• Iowa
• Kansas
• Kentucky

It is legal to sell CBD in areas where marijuana is legal, but of course, one has to accomplish all the necessary requirements in order to open a dispensary or sell CBD oil, which is among the most popular cannabis by-product. One of the reasons for CBD’s popularity is because it is non-psychoactive. It doesn’t leave people feeling high. Users have claimed pain relief from the oil, while others claim it treats anxiety and even epilepsy and seizure.

CBD’s lack of psychoactive quality makes it a popular subject for many studies and researches. People have been raving about its analgesic properties as well as its relaxing benefit among users. Because of this, over 150 clinical trials have been approved worldwide in order to determine the efficacy of CBD in treating various ailments. Some researches are also centered on the supposed positive effect of CBD among people suffering from addictions like cigarette smoking, alcoholism and drug addiction. It is quite ironic how there are still debates on whether CBD is addictive when some people suffering from various substance addiction claim that CBD oil had helped them cope with their withdrawal issues.

However, one of the most important studies on CBD is its neurological effects. If it can treat anxiety, perhaps it can also treat other serious neurological conditions like multiple sclerosis, memory disorders, epilepsy and schizophrenia. A 2017 clinical trial also found that CBD was able to taper off the seizures of people suffering from Dravet syndrome, which is one of rare types of epilepsy.
