Raising chickens can be a rewarding and relatively low-maintenance endeavor, but it still requires daily attention and care to ensure the well-being of the birds and the success of your poultry operation. Here are the key daily tasks involved in raising chickens:

Feeding: Chickens need to be fed daily. Depending on their age and the type of feed you provide (starter, grower, layer feed), you may need to feed them once or twice a day. Ensure they have access to clean water at all times.

Watering: Clean and refill their water containers daily to ensure they have a constant supply of fresh water. Proper hydration is crucial for their health and egg production.

Egg Collection: If you have laying hens, you should collect eggs daily to prevent them from getting dirty or broken. This also encourages them to lay in designated nesting boxes.

Observation: Spend some time observing your chickens each day. Look for signs of illness or stress, such as changes in behavior, unusual droppings, or injuries. Early detection can help prevent health issues.

Cleaning: Regularly clean the coop and nesting boxes to prevent the buildup of waste and reduce the risk of disease. This may not be a daily task, but it should be done at least weekly.

Checking for Predators: Check for signs of predators that may try to harm your chickens. Secure the coop and run to protect them from raccoons, foxes, and birds of prey.

Grazing/Foraging: If your chickens have access to a pasture or forage area, make sure they have enough space and suitable vegetation to graze on. Rotate their grazing area if possible to prevent overgrazing.

Supplemental Feeding: Chickens benefit from occasional treats like kitchen scraps, vegetables, and grains. While not a daily requirement, you can give them these treats to supplement their diet.

Health Checks: Keep an eye out for any signs of illness or injury. If you notice a chicken acting lethargic or unwell, take action promptly. Isolate sick birds to prevent the spread of disease.

Egg Turning (if incubating): If you're incubating eggs for hatching, you'll need to turn the eggs several times a day to ensure even embryo development. This is only necessary during the incubation period.

Egg Turning (for specific breeds): Some breeds require egg turning, even for non-incubated eggs. If you're raising such breeds, you'll need to turn the eggs daily to prevent the yolks from sticking to the shell.

Monitoring Temperature and Ventilation: Ensure that the coop maintains a comfortable temperature and proper ventilation. Depending on your location and climate, this may require daily adjustments.

Litter Management: Keep the coop floor covered with appropriate bedding material, like straw or wood shavings, and regularly replace soiled bedding to maintain a clean and dry environment.

Nest Box Maintenance: Ensure nesting boxes are clean and comfortable for egg-laying hens. Provide clean straw or nesting material as needed.

Social Interaction: Chickens are social animals and benefit from some human interaction. Spending a few minutes each day with your flock can help keep them tame and reduce stress.

While these daily tasks might seem like a lot, many of them are quick and can be integrated into your daily routine. Proper care and attention to your chickens' needs will result in healthier, happier birds and, if you have laying hens, a more productive flock. Remember that the specific requirements may vary depending on the number of chickens you have, their age, and the climate in your area.
