Sally Doty Helps Make the Office Against Interpersonal Violence Possible

Sally Doty played a major role in getting a bill through legislator. This bill battles domestic violence and created a great new resource for domestic violence victims.

 
When it comes to the number of homicides resulting from domestic violence, Mississippi has the fifth highest percentage in the United States of America. State Senator Sally Doty of District 39 in Mississippi wants to take on this issue and help lower the numbers of domestic violence in her state She is a strong advocate against domestic violence, and has used her political knowledge and skill to help take action against this statewide crisis.

The state of Mississippi has 14 domestic violence shelters. The Center for Domestic Violence Prevention in Jackson, Mississippi, strives to provide resources for men and women who are suffering from domestic violence. According to the Center for Domestic Violence, victims of abuse are often unable to leave home due to fear, shame, self-blame, isolation, and an inability to find help. Domestic violence is a serious crime that is committed against men and women, however, the majority of victims are women.

In 2014, Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant signed into law a bill that created the Office Against Interpersonal Violence (OAIV). This office exists within the Mississippi Department of Health and according to their website, it works towards “developing certification and reporting standards for domestic violence and related victim service providers, including sexual assault and human trafficking.” The OAIV has a two-part mission. First, they support a variety of services for men and women who have experienced interpersonal violence. The second part of their mission is to prevent interpersonal violence through training and education, as well as changing the attitudes and social norms that reinforce interpersonal violence.

Sally Doty played a major role in creating the OAIV. According to Sandy Middleton, the Executive Director of the Center for Domestic Violence Prevention, “Senator Doty shepherded this bill through the legislature and worked diligently to negotiate an agreement on issues that could have killed this legislation.” Senator Doty is a strong advocate for fighting against domestic violence, human trafficking and other forms of interpersonal violence. Sally Doty worked so hard to get this bill passed and create the OAIV because she believes that it is important to help the victims of interpersonal violence and to put an end to domestic violence.
