Islam teaches us to be charitable. There are many teachings in the Quran that require Muslims to be generous with what they earn so as to make life better for others.

Lilah is an Arabic term used to depict the beauty found in the Muslim community. The term’s literal translation from Arabic is beauty or night beauty. It is often used alongside other terms such as Zakah. The term Lilah is often used to express the importance of the spirit of community amongst Muslims and to encourage Muslims to give to the poor or the less fortunate.

Sadaqa is another common Arabic term. It refers to the voluntary act by Muslims of giving alms. The alms given are in addition to Zakah and not a replacement of the obligatory Zakat that every Muslim who earns a living is supposed to give. It can therefore be offered at any time and not limited to a special occasion such as a feast, ceremony or bereavement.

Sadaqa is usually given as a sign of thanksgiving or gratitude for good fortune in one’s life. There are no set amounts for the gift. It should come from the giver’s heart.

Whether it is the giving of alms or Qurbani, you can now make a big difference in someone’s life by donating your offerings to the Edhi Foundation. The Foundation has been working in various communities around the world to bring hope and shine some light in their lives.

The Edhi Foundation is involved in providing health care facilities to refugees and war torn communities primarily in Pakistan. The Foundation was established in the 1970s and begun by working amongst Afghan refugees in the late 70s through to the 80s. The organisation has since provided the much needed aid including ambulances, food, medical services and other relief services to various countries within the Middle East.
