US, 23 February 2024 - The currency system in path of exile is complex and confusing for new players. There are more than 20 different currency items (frequently referred to as Orbs) in the game.

It is important to understand the value and exchange ratios of these currency items to avoid getting ripped off in trades with other players.

Orbs of Alteration

A very expensive Orb that allows you to change all affixes on a magic item. It's unlikely a new player will need this early in the game, but it can be very valuable in later levels.
It randomly rerolls the value of an implicit mod on an item. It's a good orb to use on rare or unique items that have poor stat rolls.

Orbs of Reforging

Rerolls mod values on magic, rare, or unique items. Not very useful early in the game.
Upgrades a normal item into a rare one, grants it with four linked sockets. Very useful for item splicing during the endgame.

Changes the affixes on a rare item (4 to 6 randomly selected Affixes). Save this currency for endgame and map items, it's very valuable and a great investment.

Orbs of Chaos

Orb of Chaos rerolls a rare item’s modifiers. It’s a valuable currency for those looking to maximize their chances of getting certain Veiled mods or restructure their Passive Skill tree.
This Orb is incredibly rare, so you will need to be very lucky in order to obtain it. It’s best to trade it with other players for value. Alternatively, you can use it to identify an unidentified rare item.

Orbs of Eternity

Generally considered to be useless early in the game, this Orb randomizes the numeric value of an item's implicit properties. It is a valuable currency to trade with other players.
This rare currency allows you to re-roll a unique item into another unique one. It's a useful and inexpensive way to obtain unique gear for Atlas progression. However, it is not recommended to use it on your main gear.

Orbs of Knowledge

These are fairly common and useful early on. They upgrade a normal item into a Magic one (with two good affixes). Used for meta-crafting or re-rolling unique items that contain Veiled Mods for Atlas progression.

They are the best way to re-roll the items you have in your inventory that don’t have a specific mod you need. Also great for boosting an item’s quality.

Orbs of Wisdom

These are extremely rare and valuable currency items. They upgrade a rare item to a legendary one, retaining all existing affixes and adding one new random affix.
Used to re-roll the numeric values of the implicit mods on an armor piece (Armour, Evasion, Energy Shield). They are used by many players during endgame to improve their gear. They trade very well for Chaos Orbs.

Orbs of Resonance

This currency orb allows you to transform a white item into either a magic, rare or unique item. It's not the best leveling currency but it can be used to easily make endgame gear.
Never use this on an item with a lot of quality (except for the gems), it's a terrible investment unless you're filthy rich! It also trades for a decent amount of Exalted Orbs.

Orbs of Alchemy

This POE currency can be bought from vendor recipes and obtained as drops. It can be used to corrupt items and improve their quality. It can also be used to increase the rarity of a strongbox.

This currency is best saved for the end game Atlas progression. It can be used to upgrade a normal item to a rare one with random modifiers.

Orbs of Healing

Used to reroll the values of implicit modifiers on items. It can be extremely valuable for rolling higher value unique items.

Probably the most common currency item in the game, this orb turns a white item into a magic, rare or even a unique one. It can be traded for decent ratios at vendors and drops. The exact ratio can vary based on the league.

Orbs of Protection

Orbs of Protection are one of the most valuable items in Path of Exile. They can be used to create powerful equipment or enhance your existing gear.

These currencies are advanced and do not naturally drop from monsters. They are primarily acquired by trading with other players. They can be used to randomize the existing explicit modifiers on rare gear. They can also be used to upgrade a magic item to rare.
