Anxiety is a feeling of unease mixed with worry and dread. It’s something everyone experiences. It’s perfectly normal to feel anxious in stressful situations, whether the cause is work, school, finances, health issues or relationships. Anxiety Counselling Canberra

Some people are able to cope with high levels of anxiety. Other people don’t handle anxiety quite so well. In some cases, anxiety can play tricks on people’s minds and make them believe things are much worse than they really are. This is sometimes called “catastrophic thinking”.

What is anxiety counselling?

Long-term anxiety can be intense. It can take its toll on the mind, body and spirit. Although anxiety affects each of us in different ways, there are a number of common symptoms:

Racing or irregular heartbeat

Excessive sweating

Dry mouth

Rapid, shallow breathing

Shaky hands

Stomach ache

Sleep disturbances

Fatigue

Irritability

Restlessness

Dizziness

Poor concentration

Avoidance of social situations

Panic attacks

These days, professional counselling and therapy can help reduce and eliminate many of the above symptoms of anxiety.

Why it’s important to seek help?

Left untreated, anxiety can grow and symptoms can get worse. Many people feel too embarrassed to ask for help, or they think their anxiety is not such a big deal. They put on a mask or they adopt self-destructive coping mechanisms. This is unfortunate because anxiety counselling has been shown to be very effective.

What is anxiety counselling?

Anxiety counselling gives people the chance to talk to a trained counsellor – a professional who has a deep understanding of anxiety and who won’t laugh or dismiss the anxiety sufferer’s concerns.

In other words, anxiety counselling is a talking therapy. When we talk to another person about our worries and concerns, we release a lot of our feelings of doom, gloom and dread. By vocalising our fears and dragging them out into the daylight, we can take away their power to cause severe anxiety.

In addition, a skilled counsellor can help us to dig deep and get to the bottom of the causes of our anxiety. This makes it easier to develop appropriate coping mechanisms.

Cognitive behavioural therapy

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a very popular talking therapy for anxiety. It explores our negative thought patterns (cognitions) and looks at our behaviour and reactions to stressors.

CBT is founded on the principle that our thoughts, rather than external factors, control how we feel. Our thoughts stem from our personal expectations, viewpoints and beliefs. These are things that we can challenge, change and control - with practice - through CBT.

CBT requires diligence and patience. After all, it’s not easy to change habitual ways of thinking or a tendency to dwell on the dark side of things. A skilled and experienced counsellor is an invaluable asset when it comes to effective cognitive behavioural therapy. Psychologist Canberra Anxiety
