FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Jersey City, New Jersey: Sept 11, 2015: The Multiple Sclerosis Foundation estimates that more than 400,000 people in the United States and about 2.5 million people around the world have Multiple Sclerosis. It is also the most common autoimmune disorder of the central nervous system. Treating MS can present with many difficulties, partly because of limited treatment options, but also because of large variability in symptoms and severity between each individual. Understanding a patient’s baseline and determining whether or not their disease is progressing is not only difficult because of the complexity of the disease, but often times very stressful for MS patients and their families. However, MS disease management will soon become streamlined and hi-tech when the vision of leading neurologist, Dr. Mary Ann Picone, comes to life in a patient-focused app called MS Connect.

The MS Connect app is an organized and centralized platform specifically designed to improve the quality of care for patients with Multiple Sclerosis. By connecting directly to a patient’s electronic health records, MS Connect will upload MS-specific data from a patient’s file, and display it in an easy to understand format that provides a multifaceted view of a patient’s disease, helping the physician and patient better understand patterns and potential treatment options for each patient’s unique areas of concern. The app plans to show longitudinal patterns in functional tests such as walking speed and balance, MS-specific lab values, as well as correlations between disease status and medication changes. In addition, the app will feature a patient portal section, which would allow a patient to notify their physician of daily environmental stressors such as financial problems, decreased sleep, or a heat wave, which can effect a patient’s symptoms. MS Connect also has plans to develop a relapse tracker, which would allow a patient to create a visual picture of their relapse symptoms, to better communicate with their physician and monitor changes.

“The MS Connect app is created to make physicians better physicians and patients better patients” says Dr. Picone, explaining the need for close coordination between physician and patient in MS care.

“We have a great team in place, a basic design, and now need funds to build the mobile app. We know the app will have a positive impact on MS treatment as well as overall patient quality of life. It's not a cure, but it's a step in the right direction for improving quality of life”, says Dr. Picone.

The MS Connect app hopes to help bridge the gap between patients and physicians, and facilitate high quality personalized treatment for MS patients. MS Connectis launching an Indiegogo campaign (http://igg.me/at/msconnectapp) to drive awareness and exposure about the app. More information about the app can be found at http://www.msconnectapp.com
