Owing to rise of websites like Vidicus, the horror novel fanatics can enjoy reading a good spine-chilling story any time of the day. For the writers though, keeping up with ever-changing demands of the readers is pretty difficult.

Horror media and gore are synonymous with each other. Even when the mediums of reading have changed from paperback to platforms like Vidicus, the central element in horror has not. People have come to believe that horror novel is bound to have some gory and stomach-churning elements. But this, as a matter of fact, is not true and writers of the modern era need to change this thinking through their work. They can create horror that does not involve too much gore or blood, rather it has a spooky idea that freaks out the readers. With that said, blood is not entirely useless, but it depends upon the writer on the blood is portrayed and how the reader reacts to it.

Any knowledgeable horror fan is aware of the fact that blood and gore are not the only elements that are scary. But this genre is much more than that. Horror is meant to get the reader's heart beating. Forget about coffee and cocaine, this genre gives readers a much better high. There is no stronger feeling in the world than fear. A human being can never feel alive and energized than when their entire body is consumed by fright. This is why a majority of the readers across the world are obsessed with horror. It is invigorating and intoxicating. Fear can be a beautiful drug when consumed in the right amount.

The writers need to build the atmosphere of such a book slowly and with care. They must plant the reader into the story, as if they are dreaming and they believe that the world around them is real, despite how surreal that reality starts to become, the writer should write the typical to make way for atypical. They can add sentences that imply the strange and unknown in the middle of paragraphs that would otherwise be normal and safe. They can twist normality into abnormality. They can change the perfect suburbia into an imperfect hell.

The most interesting thing about reading a non-gory horror novel is that the readers are left to their imagination. They can create the best horror scenes in their imagination without having to read brutal and bloody scenes. Imagination can do the best job of creating something scary without having to actually use portrayal.

Thus, when it comes to psychological horror, sometimes it is best to focus on the atmosphere instead of gore. Reality is whatever the writer makes of it.
