CBSE Introduces a New Exam Format for Students of Class VI to IX

Posted April 1, 2017 by rainbowCBSE

The Central Board of Secondary Education announced to replace the CCE (continuous and comprehensive evaluation) scheme for classes VI to IX, which was followed by its affiliated schools from 2009.

The switch will apply for academic year of 2017-18, where in the new format of ‘uniform system of examination, assessment, and report card’ will help to standardize evaluation and teaching spanning respective schools.

The chairperson of the board, R.K Chaturvedi told that this change will restore a unique system of assessment and examination for the students of said classes, especially for those who will appear for the class X board exams from 2018. He was also of the opinion that the step will allow quality education to streamline with CBSE teaching standards.

Changes in Report Card and Marking Pattern

Every student from Class VI onwards along with the associated schools will have to follow the mentioned pattern. They have to adhere to the CBSE’s template right from exams to report cards; the latter will bear the board’s logo now. The new report cards (from class VI to VIII) will be identical in structure, with rows that specify periodic, terms, subject enrichment, notebook, and yearly/half yearly marks attained for each subject, corresponding scored grades.

The same will also showcase co-scholastic assessment for students, who will be marked on a 3-point scale. For class IX, the report card will show score of every term of the year consisting of necessary grades and remarks, and students will be judged on a five-point grading scale.

Transformations in Periodic Assessments

Previously, the CCE scheme had the students assessed as per four ‘formative assessments’ and two term-end ‘summative assessments’ (two for every term). 40% was reserved for formative assessment through the year, with evaluation based from teachers as well, and 60% was based on pen-paper tests.

But, the new scheme will have two terms where the pen-paper tests will carry an importance of 90% that includes 80 marks for yearly or half yearly exam, with 10 marks from 20 marks to be set aside for each term’s periodic assessment. Now each term will comprise of 100 marks, out of which 10 will go for subject enrichment and submission of notebook (five marks each).

Updates in Syllabus and Examinations

The half yearly exams (term 1) for the classes VI onwards is to be on accord to syllabus completed until examination. The syllabus of yearly exams will commit to a slightly different format. Also, such exams will cover more of syllabus (term 1), wherein 30% will be dedicated for class VIII, 20% VII class, and 10% for VI class. This scheme will prepare the class IX students and those of higher classes to prepare for exams and be acquainted with entire syllabus.

Chaturvedi said that uniform stands are imperative to close down any disparities in system that creates problems for students at time they migrate to another school. As CBSE affiliated schools have increased to 18,688 until now from 309 in 1962, it has become more essential to implement a uniform system to ease difficulties for migration students to seek admissions at new schools.
