Oscar Villarreal knows how big of a race the Head of the Cuyhoga has become and encourages people to get registered soon.

Oscar Villarreal is pleased that the Head of the Cuyahoga Regatta is on the way again. The race is being held on September 20th, 2014 and is once again sponsored by the Cleveland rowing Foundation and Sanctioned by USA Rowing. This Regatta has been growing each year to last year. In 2013, the race had 427 entries. This year, there is a cap of 425 entries total, so it is important that teams get registered as soon as possible. Registration opened on August 11th and will close on September 13th. The race itself will be held a week later. There are many places for spectators to view the race from, but with the event starting at 6am, space will be at a premium so be sure to get there early.

Oscar Villarreal knows that the Head of the Cuyahoga Regatta is by far one of the most technically challenging regatta head races in the country each year and requires a significant amount of training and dedication. The race has numerous heats for different skill levels and for different crew setups. The race course extends for approximately 4800 meters, and it is very successful of attracting tourists from all over the country.

The Head of the Cuyahoga race is geared to be very challenging and provide rowers with a level of difficulty that is not provided in most other regattas. The race begins and ends at the Rivergate Park. The park was created in 2010 with the dedication and donations from Great community members like Oscar Villarreal. The Park sits where there used to be only vacant lots full of concrete. But some people had a vision of Green Space that was open to the community and Rivergate Park was created.

The first Regatta held in the area had 20,000 in attendance as spectators. It was between two rowing teams, the Ivanhoe Boat Club of Cleveland Ohio and the Rover Boat Club of Sandusky Ohio. This was no modern Regatta however. This race took place in 1856 and has since been immortalized in the lore of United States Rowing history.

The race has been happening since 1996 and has the support of the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard has presented rules that allow for the safety of participants and spectators. The Cuyahoga is a somewhat narrow river at places and with the extreme curves that exist, the Coast Guard understands that there are some safety concerns. So after imposing temporary rules last year, the Coast Guard this year introduced permanent rule changes for approval. The rule changes would just close the part of the river being used by the Regatta and the accompanying dragon boat races during the races.

Oscar Villarreal encourages rowers and teams to make plans to attend now while there is still room to do so. With the 425 cap on entries, the field will fill up quickly, and the race is coming up soon. The Head of The Cuyahoga race is now entering its prime as one of the most technically difficult races in the country and attendance is sure to be very high.
