Dentists play a vital role in society, and are responsible for a host of tasks including cleaning, extracting and filling teeth to taking x-rays and recommending the best oral hygiene practices.

Dentists have played an important role in society for a long time. Their assessment and treatment of patients with teeth and gum issues has helped people smile better and enjoy life. Along with providing care and treatment, the dentist is often the best bet for useful education on how to maintain oral health.
For almost three decades, Dr. Leslie Griesdorf was the preferred dentist for many patients living in Toronto. Straight out of medical school, he worked at a hospital in Ottawa before he decided to move back to his hometown of Toronto to open a private practice. He worked his way into the good graces of the city folk, and during his long career was held in high regard by the Ontario Dental Association and the Canadian Dental Association.

Dr Leslie Griesdorf is retired now, and he looks back fondly on his career. Other than being able to interact with people on a daily basis and forge lasting friendships, he also knows that the dentistry career is a fulfilling one for young individuals who choose it. For starters, dentists are well paid. Whether they work in a hospital or open up a private practice like Dr. Griesdorf, the position pays a relatively good salary. Of course, experienced dentists are likely to earn higher than fresh graduates.

Dentists will always be needed, even in a recession. Because the importance of oral health is something many people are yet to grasp fully, there remains a lot of promise for dentists. Combined with the fact that there are under-served areas in the country, even part time dentists will be appreciated for their input.

Like most medical professionals, dentists are highly regarded in their communities. Indeed, for some graduates, the potentially high status is a motivator to pursue the career. And with increased awareness in the public domain on the importance of dental care, the dentist’s role continues to grow in the eyes of society.

Lastly, the profession is a flexible one, so that dentists can set their own hours and choose which days to work. Because of this, many choose to practice part-time and focus on other things like family or business.

About : Dr. Leslie Griesdorf is a Toronto native who retired from working as a dentist in 2004. He had operated a private practice for almost 30 years. Upon retirement, he chose to focus on spending time with family and learning more about American history.
