Dr David Soria is the NBA's Medical Director for Global Affairs

Dr David Soria is heading off to Rio de Janeiro in October and will be courtside when the Cleveland Cavaliers take on the Miami Heat in a preseason basketball game.

Dr David Soria is the Medical Director of Global Affairs for the NBA, a role that has him administering to the health care needs of NBA players and staff at national and international NBA events. The work has already taken Dr David Soria to Asia and Europe, and is now looking south to Rio.

The game is of particular interest to NBA fans, because it will be the first time that NBA superstar LeBron James will be squaring off against his old teammates on the Miami Heat. LeBron James broke into the league with the Cleveland Cavaliers, but in a controversial move signed with the Heat as a free agent four years ago.

LeBron James was born and grew up in Akron, and says now that he has a much deeper appreciation for his roots in the Buckeye State. "My relationship with Northeast Ohio is bigger than basketball," he said at re-signing with the Cavaliers at the end of the 2014 NBA playoffs. "I didn't realize that four years ago. I do now."

LeBron James was reviled in Cleveland when he left the Cavaliers for the Heat, but it appears that all has been forgiven now that he is back in the fold.

Like the NBA legend considered the greatest player of his generation, Dr David Soria also has strong ties to the state of Ohio. He attended Bowling Green State University where he majored in Chemistry, and graduated Magna cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science degree. He went to medical school at Ohio State University's College of Medicine in Columbus and received his degree in June 1993. From there, Dr David Soria entered the Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Case Western Reserve University, the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, and the MetroHealth Medical Center. He was the program's Chief Resident from July 1995 to July 1996.

Dr David Soria is a member of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine, the American College of Emergency Physicians, and the Florida Emergency Medical Political Action Committee, among other professional society memberships.
