Company Broker Group says business sellers don't always do enough to grow their businesses

Company Broker Group specializes in selling businesses of all sizes. And Company Broker Group owner Paul Olsen says that many of the business owners the Company Broker Group represents have not fully developed an exit strategy for selling their business, and often have neglected the potential of their businesses for the three or four years leading up to the decision to sell.

"It is common that the owner is not doing all they can to grow the company from a standpoint of aggressive sales and marketing efforts," Paul Olsen says. "They are often burned out and are no longer passionate about growing the company like they did during the ten years, when they were younger."

It is the view of Company Broker Group, he explained, that the ultimate sales price and highest value for a client's business will be largely based on the ability of the broker to find a buyer who sees the potential gold in the client's business. "I have always said," Paul Olsen continued, "there are two values for every business. The first value is based upon traditional business valuation methods, which are typically simply a multiple of cash flow. Buyers, ofcourse, love paying this value for a business because it often results in a low ball offer."

Company Broker Group, says Paul Olsen, can use effective positioning and marketing to get a much higher value for a seller's business. "We can get a buyer excited about the upside growth and potential of the business with a buyer who has the passion, vision and financial resources to grow the business quickly growing forward," he explains. "A buyer who clearly sees the incredible upside growth and potential of [the client's] business will often pay substantially more for [the] business than a buyer who simply wants to pay three to four times the trailing three years' cash flow of the business."

The Company Broker Group brokers try to create a bidding war for their clients, which can lead to the most successful outcome. "I had three buyers at the very end that wanted my business," recalled one client. "We had to pick and choose from that situation, which was a delight. A little bit nerve-wracking, but it was a delight to have people that were so interested, and so qualified, that it was really a great experience."
