William Heikkinen started his first year at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia in September of 2015. Since then, he has excelled in his classes and hopes to finish the school year strong. Heikkinen attended Nebrija University in Madrid, Spain for a semester before returning to the United States to complete his education at one of the finest public universities in the United States.
Indeed, William Heikkinen was attracted to the College of William and Mary because of its commitment to its undergraduate classes, professors, and students. The school works hard to maintain low class sizes and ensure that all undergraduates get the instruction and attention they need to succeed, even in survey courses and graduation requirement courses. Many low-level courses in other colleges are taught by teacher’s assistants and are usually comprised of hundreds of students. William and Mary keeps its admissions low and creates an atmosphere in which 99% of all classes are taught by actual professors.
William Heikkinen plans to study Government and Hispanic Studies as he moves closer to choosing a major at William and Mary College. After studying Spanish intensely in high school, tutoring ESL students and teaching students English in Spain, Heikkinen is very interested in the Spanish culture, as well as Spanish-speaking cultures in North, Central, and South America. He wants to study how these cultures have effected and blended with American culture. He’s also interested in politics and how the system works in the United States.
By interacting and living with people of many different cultures in Spain during his time there studying at Nebrija University and teaching English, William Heikkinen learned not only how other societies and countries work but also how people view the United States and its government system. This new perspective fanned an interest in government that he plans to pursue at the College of William and Mary.
William Heikkinen plans to learn as much as he can about government systems and Hispanic culture in the United States during his time at the College of William and Mary over the next four years. Where he goes and what he does after that will be up to him.
