William Acker of Miami University is a perpetual student of history who has always displayed a keen interest in the happenings of the American Civil War.

It may seem like, at least on the surface, that William Acker of Miami University is nothing but a talented and successful auto supply salesman; a man of business who consumes himself with the development and growth of a successful career. To the untrained eye, this may seem like the case, though Acker has also always maintained a strong, even passionate interest in human history, particularly in the events surrounding and making up the United States Civil War.

William Acker of Miami University earned his Associate’s degree in History from Miami Community College. It was during his time as a history student that Acker performed extensive research on the Civil War, and produced several well-written papers on the subject that earned him high praise from his professors and his peers. Acker has also made it a point to visit many of the key battlefield sites of the Civil War, as well as other historical places of interest that played an important role in the war’s development and its outcome.

“More Americans, and this is true, were killed during the U.S. Civil War than during any American military conflict either before or after…” says William Acker of Miami University. “This was one of the most divisive moments in U.S. history, though it had the amazing effect of actually bringing the states, and the country, closer together than ever before.”

The Civil War helped to end the abhorrent brutality and injustice of slavery in the United States, says Acker, and also helped to end, or at least settle, the Federalism vs. States’ Rights debate for years to come. The War, says William Acker of Miami University, helped to establish constitutional law as the law of the land, and to ensure that federal law could not be superseded and/or ignored by states or by state law.

As William Acker of Miami University knows, the U.S. Civil War nearly brought the country to the brink of collapse, though it also helped to solidify the nation as a one “of the people, by the people and for the people.” His favorite subject, the Civil War continues to serve as a stark reminder of just how dichotomous, divisive yet uniting American politics and society can be.
