Urmy Shukla has had quite an academic journey from the Ivy League Brown University to her current program at Emory University. Her graduate studies are based around Sociology and Human Rights and her world travel experience has introduced her to many types of culture and society. Urmy Shukla argues in her blog (called “Rights and Results”) that many people believe women to be lesser than men in foreign countries, especially in India. Urmy Shukla argues this is not entirely the case.

Being an Indian woman herself, Urmy Shukla has worked hard to accomplish her goals and is able to boast a B.A., M.S., and soon enough a PhD. She has known many women that have accomplished similar feats as well as some that can add M.D. or J.D. to their names. Urmy Shukla says that while in earlier times men may have had an upper-hand, women are now starting to gain ground. This is something she does not want to see end and has taken a stand to announce a lifelong pursuit of equal human rights.

Equality is a very important issue to Urmy Shukla, so she uses her skills in monitoring and evaluating to better the status of all minorities. Urmy Shukla believes boundaries between nations are diminishing rapidly, and that we as United States citizens need to be aware of global interdependency. With this being said, Urmy Shukla wants to dedicate her life to making sure people in every nation are on the same level and considered to equal in value.

Urmy Shukla plans to use the knowledge she has gained in her higher education as well as the passion she holds within to create a universal society that values every type of individual simply because they are human beings. She has increased attention on this forefront so far and Urmy Shukla hopes to continue doing so until it is no longer necessary. She admits that this day may never come, but Urmy Shukla does believe rights will come more easily to all citizens as time goes by, as long as people keep making their voices heard.
