Safina Padaniya and her husband Gordon enjoy motoring around the United States in their recreational vehicle. They have been vacationing in their RV for more than twenty years, but now that both of them are retired they are taking even longer trips around the United States.

So far, they have not run out of places to go. But they have visited all fifty-eight National Parks, and countless State Parks and other attractions.

The latest twist to their footloose lifestyle is the Care-A-Van program started by Habitat for Humanity. They spent part of this past summer in Lincoln, Nebraska working on a Habitat for Humanity project. “It’s a great program for people like us,” Safina Padaniya says. “It lets us combine our enthusiasm for the RV life with the desire to be part of a worthy cause that is going to benefit our fellow citizens.” Habitat for Humanity, she explains, is a non-profit organization that is committed to building affordable housing in communities around the world. “They want a world where everyone has a decent place to live,” she explains.

After learning about the Care-A-Vanner program they began looking for a project that fit their schedule. “It really didn’t matter to us where it was,” she said. “We would go to it.” The only requirement was an RV and a willingness to volunteer. Habitat for Humanity approved a project in Lincoln, Nebraska late last year, and the actual work was just getting underway when Safina and Gordon were about to hit the road.

“One of the things I like most about Habitat is that you don’t need any ability with tools to get involved. There’s always a lot to do that doesn’t involve actual construction. You can work in the job-site office, which as a former executive assistant is what I did. Or you can be a ‘gopher’ for the work crew.”

Safina Padaniya and her husband spent about a month volunteering at the site before continuing on to Texas and Louisiana, where they visited with family and friends. She is a retired executive assistant, and he is a retired high school algebra teacher. When they aren’t on the road in their RV, they live in Woodland Hills, California.
