Outi Crannell Advocates for More Blood Donations in Her Community

Outi Crannell, mother of a victim of children’s cancer, advocates for increased blood donations in her community.

Outi Crannell moved to Somers, New York in the early nineties. She worked as a wellness and fitness professional in Finland for years before she moved. She married Richard Crannell soon after she moved to New York, and taught at the Finnish Language School of New York for eighteen years. The Crannells had two children, a boy and a girl. Their son is a senior at the SUNY Environmental School of Forestry in Syracuse, but their daughter, Eeva, died of complications from cancer at the age of sixteen.

Eeva Crannell, the daughter of Outi Crannell, was diagnosed with a common form of childhood leukemia at age two, got a bone marrow transplant at the age of six, and died ten years later from the years of harsh treatments and recurring bouts with the deadly disease. Outi and Richard of course were crushed by their daughter’s death, but they have used their tragic position to advocate for more funding for cancer research throughout the United States, and for more donations to blood banks throughout the area.

Outi Crannell says that blood banks are crucial to a cancer patient’s survival. Some patients need many blood transfusions to have a chance of beating the disease. Their platelet counts suffer from cancer treatment, causing them to feel sicker and succumb to symptoms quicker. Platelets need to be replenished constantly. The body constantly produces platelets in the blood in normal circulatory systems. Blood banks are crucial to the platelet counts in cancer patients, and they need a large supply of blood to help the cancer patients and others injured or sick in their communities. The Crannells hope that their advocacy can help people living with cancer in their community, and their work increasing the awareness of the importance of blood banks helps sick and injured people throughout all communities in the northeast and the United States.

Outi Crannell is a freelance artist and photographer who has worked with many local clients over the years. She is a proud resident of Somers, and she plans to continue her life there with her family for many more years. Her work shows her support of the community and everyone who lives there.
