Melodie Z Scott believes people should be actively involved in groups and associations that support their professional work. This keeps the industry united and focused, and also builds a strong community

There are a number of associations people can join on a professional level. Some associations target working professionals on a regional, state, or national level. It is usually up to each individual professional to decide whether they wish to participate in an organization. Often, there are benefits to doing so.

Melodie Z Scott is a firm believer in the benefits of becoming an association member. “Often, associations carry resources to benefit their members. You can talk with other members who can relate to the work you perform, and even get involved in the organization itself,” says Melodie Z Scott.

Melodie Z Scott has been a member of several associations related to her field of work as a fiduciary. The organizations she joined were at a state level – with the exception of one. Melodie Z Scott joined the Professional Conservators of California, the Professional Fiduciary Association of California and the PFAC Southern Region, and the National Guardianship Association.

“I held a number of positions within these associations. I served as a secretary twice, vice president once, president three times, legislative chair, and conference chair,” says Melodie Z Scott. Her participation furthered Melodie Z Scott’s commitment to fiduciary work because she was making a notable contribution to the field.
“In 2004, I was featured in the January 2004 release of AARP the Magazine, I was awarded the Professional Fiduciary Association of California’s 2004 Outstanding Service Award, and I was named the National Guardianship Association’s 2004 Affiliate Member of the Year,” says Melodie Z Scott. Being recognized for her contributions inspired Melodie Z Scott to continue her work as a fiduciary while contributing to the industry through association work. In 2007, Melodie Z Scott was one of three state-approved educators.

Melodie Z Scott enjoyed her time participating in groups associated with her professional work. She encourages people to look for associations relevant to their work. “There are a variety of associations to join. I was a member of fiduciary associations, but there are dental associations, construction associations – all kinds. When people see you are a member of a professional organization, it boosts their confidence in your services. It also keeps you updated on news and changes within your area of expertise,” says Melodie Z Scott.
