Language studies in universities face a number of challenges in the modern age. There are challenges from a budgetary standpoint, challenges from a principle standpoint that comes from the universities and the inevitable changes they go through. There are also times when language programs are faced with a problem that is constituted by a faculty that is lacking in quality, leadership and vision. They become the target of cuts and streamlining such that the programs get into jeopardy. Luke Kay has witnessed the ups and downs of language study and as a university professor of honors Spanish and French, he feels that this is a precarious situation that needs people to stand up and speak on behalf of the value of putting a full program together with the right people.

Language studies have tremendous value and they have a role in changing the world each and every day. Businesses are made and lost on the nuances of language and having language in the mix presents a true business advantage for many international corporations and entities across the globe. In the world of government, the need to interact with different countries in different languages is quite clear. Working with different cultures and people is made tremendously easier with the advent of a common language and understanding that is inherent in fully immersive language studies.

In regards to the problem of personnel, the field needs leadership that will drive people to want to teach others in every way possible. This experience and skill has to be focused on a fully rounded approach to language. Culture, language, and history are all intertwined in an appropriate language program and the participants in this program need to have these elements as well.

Fortunately, there are leaders in the industry that have driven ideas in such a way that the addition of language is being applied appropriately. The demand is there and it has been for many years, it is more important than ever in many cases as business runs at the speed of the internet in this modern age and connections are made quickly. There is no time to work out language in a lot of these situations so having that integration is a necessary element. The future is filled with universities that step up to integrate language programs in a way that is cohesive and delivers the language studies that the world of diplomacy and business demands.
