Laura Murphy of St Charles IL says new smartphone apps empower patients.

Laura Murphy of St Charles IL says she is astonished by the proliferation of health-related smart phone apps that have made most of her patients far more informed than they were even five years ago, when she was still a relatively inexperienced registered nurse. She is a registered nurse in the Intensive Care Unit at St Charles General Hospital, and says that she is tremendously impressed by the wealth in solid medical information that helps to make her patients well informed about their health, and the treatment options that they are facing.

There are thousands of software applications developed every year that members of the general public can get and use, says Laura Murphy of St Charles IL. They are made especially for smartphones and tablets, and enable users to access a tremendous amount of medical information.

She is particularly impressed by an app called WebMD. "WebMD has been a fantastic site for health information for years," Laura Murphy of St Charles IL says. "Now their app lets people check their symptoms, get drug and treatment information, and get tips on first aid. There is also a feature that lets you identify prescription drugs and over-the-counter meds by the shape and color of the pill."

Another great app is called iTriage, which she says also lets people search and find health information. "Users can keep up with health-related news and learn more about their symptoms, too." Laura Murphy of St Charles IL also likes the Apple Health app. Consumers are provided with an easy-to-read, fully customizable dashboard of health and fitness information. "You can use it with many other health and fitness apps, too," she continues. "I have one patient now who used it to collect data on her heart rate, her blood sugar, her cholesterol, and so on."

Finally, Laura Murphy of St Charles IL says that she has become a fan of an app called CellScope Oto. "You can use it to diagnose ear infections. The mobile app is used with an attachment that turns your iPhone into an otoscope. It fits over the phone's camera and has a plastic tip that you insert into the ear, enabling you to take still of moving images of the ear canal and ear drum. Is that amazing, or what?"
