Kathleen Gerenger and her horse won top honors at the Geneseo Horse Trials.

At this year’s Geneseo Horse Trials, Kathleen Gerenger, a well-regarded accountant from Belmont, NY, celebrated an exciting equestrian win. Kathleen Gerenger and her horse, Gamble, were the winners in the training level event at the equestrian competition. Though she is better known for her work in accounting, Kathleen Gerenger is also an avid equestrian, and a champion for abused horses. In fact, Kathleen Gerenger’s horse, Gamble, was rescued by her after his career as a racehorse ended. Without Kathleen Gerenger’s intervention, Gamble might not be alive today.

“It’s hard to believe that just a few years ago, we were rescuing Gamble,” said Kathleen Gerenger. “I’m glad to see my horse so healthy and competing again. And it’s great to have such an amazing animal to work with in these competitions.”

Gamble’s story is not unusual, and Kathleen Gerenger is working to protect horses like him. As an active volunteer with the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation of New York, Kathleen Gerenger is an advocate for animals. Many racing animals ‒ whether greyhounds or thoroughbreds ‒ face an uncertain future when their racing careers end. Sometimes they are even sent to slaughter. This possibility was the case with Kathleen Gerenger’s Gamble, and served as the impetus for her to take action for retired racehorses. Kathleen Gerenger now works to make sure that thoroughbreds like Gamble, who are no longer racing, aren’t put down, but instead are given a chance to experience life as retired horses.

Through her work with the organization, Kathleen Gerenger hopes that more horses will be rescued. In Kathleen Gerenger’s case, rescuing Gamble helped her discover a new hobby. Kathleen Gerenger loves riding and training Gamble, who can still compete in equestrian events, and who led Kathleen to her significant win at the Geneseo Horse Trials.

“I’m so proud to see Gamble doing better, and I’m proud of our victory,” said Kathleen Gerenger. “It’s really exciting to see a rescued horse improve and continue to have an exciting life as he grows older. I can’t imagine life without Gamble!”

Horseback riding isn’t the only sport that Kathleen Gerenger has found success with. Kathleen Gerenger is also an avid runner, taking time out of her busy accounting schedule to take part in road races to raise funds for charity. When she isn’t hard at work or exercising, Kathleen Gerenger loves to spend time with her family. These days, Gamble the horse is part of Kathleen Gerenger’s family.
