Heather Shoemaker of Wyoming is proud to announce the opening of her new exhibit at the Flat Mountain in downtown Cheyenne.

"Legal Doodling" features mostly pencil on legal yellow pad sketches by Heather Shoemaker, a Cheyenne attorney known for sketching compulsively when she interviews clients, and even during court proceedings. The drawings that make up "Legal Doodling" have been culled from nearly ten years of collected doodles by the lawyer.

"It's really an unusual exhibit," says Flat Mountain Gallery curator Harold Tree. "These really are doodlings, in the most literal sense of the term. But they are so different, and so extraordinary, and executed with such consummate skill, that they must be considered genuine works of art. And we're thrilled to be able to show it here at Flat Mountain Gallery."

The doodling that make up the approximately fifty pieces of "Legal Doodling" have drawn a lot of attention from artistic circles. Working with Harold Tree, Heather Shoemaker of Wyoming selected the sketches that make up "Legal Doodling" and prepared them for exhibit. The exhibit will be at the Flat Mountain Gallery for about three months, Tree says, before moving on to a gallery in Denver, Colorado.

Tree says there are four sketches that are included in the exhibit that were not the doodlings that make up most of the pieces. These sketches – two pen and ink portraits, one pencil portrait, and a pencil landscape – are what the curator called more formal drawings by the artist made when she was not in the midst of legal work. "They are of an entirely different order," he says. "They are just as compelling, but due to the circumstances of their creation are noticeably different, stylistically speaking. They provide a good contrast to the doodlings of Heather Shoemaker of Wyoming, and we are delighted we have been able to include them."

Heather Shoemaker of Wyoming is a 2004 graduate of the University of Wyoming College of Law. She spent two years as an Associate in The Law Office of Vernon Dill before opening her own practice in Cheyenne in 2007. She specializes in criminal and civil law.
