Established author and former successful journalist Hans Shmidheiser shares some important writing tips that can help aspiring writers find success in the profession.

Becoming a successful writer takes a lot of hard work, passion, and dedication that makes every piece of writing a powerful and inspiring one. Renowned for his in-depth, insightful and enjoyable columns and articles during his time as foreign affairs correspondent, Hans Shmidheiser is now an established author who understands the work required to make it in the writing profession. He knows that success cannot be achieved overnight and encourages writers to be prepared and ready for a tough road.

"Every writing experience is unique to each person, and thus writers will face different learning curves and challenges on their writing journeys," said Hans Shmidheiser while acknowledging that every writer is unique. However, he knows there are certain practices that can help upcoming writers thrive in the profession.

Consistent reading is one practice that Hans Shmidheiser advocates for. Reading has several benefits, notably increasing concentration levels, critical thinking, and helping to reduce stress. In his free time, Hans reads as much as he can, and has established an impressive collection of over 2,000 books and articles. He encourages writers to read as much as possible, seeing as the practice helps to challenge their ideas while exposing them to different writing styles.
For writers, inspiration can come at any moment, and often from different situations. As a former foreign correspondent for a major, well-known news publication, Hans Shmidheiser knows the importance of always having a notebook or paper to jot down ideas.

“Never leave the house without a pen and notebook, as some of the best ideas will hit when you least expect them,” he says.

Much of a writer’s success is based on the effort and time they put into growing their talent. As such, Hans Shmidheiser encourages aspiring writers to set aside ample time to write. Such periods should be devoid of any distractions, whether from family, friends or electronic gadgets. Writing time should be sacred, and writers must do everything in their power to protect it.

Now an established writer of the popular Johnny Normal fictional book series, Hans Shmidheiser has always been open to providing writing tips to young writers in his New Orleans community.
