Gene Sommariva enjoys surfing as one of his favorite activities. He seeks to share helpful advice on the best ways to enhance your beginning surfing experience.

Surfing the ocean may not be for everyone, but for those seeking a different kind of heart-pounding thrill, there is little else that can come close. As an experienced surfer, Gene Sommariva seizes every chance he can to grab his board and make his way to the beach; a great way, he believes, to challenge his physical and mental limitations while experiencing the adrenaline rush and excitement of successfully riding another fast-moving wave.

Gene Sommariva has a few simple pieces of advice for those considering to test the water of this amazing sport, and to get the most enjoyment possible from an incredible recreational opportunity.

Be Patient

Surfing, like anything else, takes some getting used to, and requires an extensive amount of practice and patience to get to a satisfying level. Gene Sommariva recommends doing your best to enjoy the initial learning phase of surfing, to have fun with the paddle outwards and to always ask questions of the more skilled along the way.

Fundamentals

Again, learning surfing is much like learning anything else, and you won’t get very far without working on your fundamental skills first. As Gene Sommariva states, it’s important to first familiarize yourself with such aspects as paddling, maintaining your balance, success in simpler and smaller waves and adhering in the generally accepted rules of, yes, surfer etiquette. Work on building up your knowledge base and experience with the basics before lining up with the seasoned surfers on the more challenging waves.

Find the Right Board

Surf boards come in an incredible array of sizes and distinct shapes, and surfboards tend to be designed to meet the needs of individual skill levels. The idea of a one-size-fits-all surfboard has gone out the window, as Gene Sommariva knows, making it necessary to carefully select a board that will work best in the beginning phases. Consult professionals and/or other experienced surfers to figure out what board is best for you as you begin your surfing adventure.

Record Yourself

If at all possible, ask a friend or fellow surfer to record you while you’re surfing. Having a record of yourself on the open water allows you to make adjustments along the way.

About: Gene Sommariva enjoys an abundance of recreational activities. Surfing is perhaps one of his favorites.
