This month marks the 20th anniversary of Dr Harish Hosalkar’s record setting M.B.B.S. exam grade at the University of Bombay. He sat down to discuss what the accomplishment meant for him, where it led him, and what he is doing now.

Dr Harish Hosalkar experienced much success at the University of Bombay. He was consistently a high achiever and finished in the topmost percentile in Secondary School Certification, First Year Junior College, and Second Year Junior College. Dr Harish Hosalkar was also awarded the B.G. Gandbhir Gold Medal for General Proficiency in the Grade 10 examination.

But it was the final exams where Dr Harish Hosalkar really made his mark. On the first M.B.B.S. examinations, he obtained distinctions in both anatomy and biochemistry. On the second exam he stood first in the subjects of “Forensic Medicine & Toxicology” and “Microbiology.” On the final M.B.B.S. examination, Dr Harish Hosalkar ranked first in the entire university. He obtained all time record marks for the school and became the recipient of many different awards and recognitions.

Dr Harish Hosalkar officially won eight awards affiliated with his record setting distinction. Among these were the Johnson and Johnson Merit Scholarship, the Pfizer Medical Award and Pfizer Medallion, and the Dr. Ganesh Madhav Kurulkar Prize.

“My success on that exam really helped me in a variety of different ways,” Dr Harish Hosalkar said. “It opened doors for me that I never would have dreamed possible. I am still thankful for the support I received.”

Dr Harish Hosalkar has gone on to do many different things since the fall of 1993. He has spent time teaching, lecturing, researching, writing, and practicing. He is a Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon in both the United States (California and Pennsylvania) and India. He is also a Diplomate of the National Board of Orthopedic Surgery in India.

Today, Dr Harish Hosalkar is working as the Director of the Center for Hip Preservation and Children’s Orthopedics in San Diego, California. The center is a lifelong dream of his.

“I am thrilled about the new center. It allows me to achieve my dream of helping children achieve an active, pain-free, fully functional lifestyle,” Dr Harish Hosalkar said.
